Basic maintenance for decks

A well built deck can bring years of joy to a family or individuals who love spending time outside. To preserve a deck its important to conduct regular inspections and maintenance. Keep reading to learn about what we recommend for basic deck maintenance.

One of the most important tips is to conduct regular inspections on your deck. If you have a wood deck regularly check for rot and the sturdiness of the boards. If you have a composite deck, regularly move your furniture around to avoid shaded spots on your deck. Its important to inspect your deck so that you have a record of when you start noticing weak-spots or wear and tear.

Annually conduct a deep clean on your deck. Start by sweeping all the dirt and debris off of the deck, then pressure wash the deck on a low setting with a wide nozzle to avoid damage to the wood. If you do not feel comfortable pressure washing your deck, another option is to scrub your deck with a bristle brush and rinse it after you finish.

If you have a wood deck there will come a time where your deck will need to be re-stained. Some staining solutions require re-staining every few years. Conducting this as part of your maintenance routine will make your deck look brand new for years to come.

Its also important to seal the deck with a sealant to promote lasting protection to the wood. Sealant is dependent on how the wood reacts to water. If your city gets extremely wet its in your best interest to seal the wood to present rot.
